Over the years many of our customers ask us about their carpet fabric and if/when they should look to budget for new carpeting.
Here is a breakdown of the 3 main carpet fabrics that we run into and some quick pros and cons.
Acrylic- Acrylic carpeting is very difficult to stain, has great chemical resistance, wears like iron and stands up well to fading. These are all great characteristics to carpet fabric, but acrylic is by far the most challenging to clean.
The pros to this fabric are also its cons as acrylic is manufactured to not absorb moisture. This makes it stain resistant, but very challenging to clean. Once a traffic or wear pattern has been made it is almost impossible to clean out, you will always know where the foot traffic walks in your home.
Polyester – Some of the advantages of polyester carpet are: it is normally a less expensive alternative to other fabrics, very stain resistant, withstands bleaching and fading and the amazingly soft feel when you are walking around barefoot.
However, polyester can be especially challenging when trying to clean. It requires more time to clean than nylon. It is difficult to remove oil based products (grease, makeup, marker, tar, asphalt residue)… Also, traffic and wear patterns are more noticeable even after cleaning in this fabric (not as bad as Olefin, but more so than Nylon).
Nylon – One great advantage of nylon carpeting is its durability to withstand foot traffic, wear and tear over long periods of time. We have worked on nylon carpet that is more than 20 years old and still has a good deal of life left before needing to be replaced. Nylon is also easy to maintain with your basic vacuuming and general cleaning. In our opinion the best reason to choose nylon carpet is its ability to be professional cleaned with amazing results. Nylon cleans up far better than any of the other carpet fabrics and we have seen the results first hand.
One disadvantage of nylon carpet is you need to test chemicals before using on the carpet, as many have the ability to bleach or discolor the fabric.
